last week i was very honoured to have been invited to a good friend's commencement (i don't know why they call it that.. perhaps it's just to mean that they will be commencing on their adult/working lives). honestly i did not expect that i would be part of the celebration. so thank you rubber band for inviting me to be a part of your special day (and i really mean special). and i got to catch up with eelis!! ^_^ which is like awesome because i haven't seen her in like dunno how long.. and i finally got to meet ah lee's parents, and might i just add are soooo nice... the mom esp was so funny and open! before i go on...
CONGRATS ON COMMENCING RUBBER BAND, AH LEE, JIMMY, SHAWN, WEILI!!! ALL THE BEST FOR YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVOURS! ^_^
the ceremony itself was fantastic, SMU really went all out for the commencement ceremony. and while the main ceremony was for EVERYONE, they later divided the graduates into different areas for their respective faculties. in comparison, i felt that uwa's convo was on a much more personal level with each faculty on a different day. only problem is that you can't get every of your friends (cross-faculty) wearing the harry potter robes to take a pic with you! of cos the venue which i had my convo was more awesome because we were right on campus and winthrop hall is just amazing with its huge-ass pipe organ!!!
i must say that i really got into the spirit of things when they rolled the video montage, because i could really see the graduates having fun throughout their 4 yrs with SMU. the speeches from the guests of honour and the deans were inspiring and humourous. they captured my attention... although after a while, the number of speeches got a bit overwhelming!!
the highlight of event, for me, was my rubber band's speech. i have heard it before... when i met him for dinner and he was rehearsing it.. saying that i'm the first to hear it besides his parents. i highly doubt it. but nonetheless... i enjoyed it both times. AND! besides him crying over his dogs who have passed away, i have never seen him showed that much emotions as he was thanking his parents. even i almost teared.
(hey! rubber... u know your mom cried.. then i shock and i didn't know what to do?? whether to put my arm around her or pet her arm or hold her hand loh!!! anyways i just petted her on her arm and smiled at her)
when i told my friend that i was invited to attend the commencement, he asked why was i making a big deal out of it. it's just a commencement. why was i thinking of what i should wear? why was i even thinking of wearing a dress? it is a big deal. because he is my rubber band. he has been there when i needed him, and so i shall be dressed nicely and give my loudest applause when they say his name. ^_^
people have said many times that they cannot stand him (and i have repeated that many times in this blog) because he is arrogant. well he has the right to be. because he is THAT good. but u know, when i think back about it, he's prob the most subtle in his achievements. before heading into the suntec convention hall 601, i had no idea he was up for so many awards. stepping out of suntec convention hall 603, i have an even deeper respect for this mad nutter. impressed? yes. feeling the warmth of our friendship? DEFINITELY!
